In my case it's weather related - I have satellite Internet and it's chancy in 
bad weather.  So I get a few mails downloaded, and then my connection dies 
before the messages have been flushed from the mail server, and next time I 
connect I get them all again.  In weather like I'm getting today, a message 
could get downloaded 5 or 6 times!

So, if you have a poor connection, the same thing could happen, but shouldn't 
happen otherwise.
