[Growwine] Wind Knocks Down St. Catherine grapes

I have only joined the crop insurance program 3 years ago so I am NOT an expert.
I did have a claim on my dessert grapes due to the draught last season. The crop was very light due to lack of rain, so it ripened sooner than expected and the birds came in before I had out my propane cannons. It was covered for the full amount eligible ie 80%. But when you consider that I did not need to pick, pack and sell the crop I actually ended up with at least the same net income I would have had the crop gone to full maturity. The premiums are paid for 50% so compared to other types on insurance it is not expensive.

Of course it is not for everyone.

I did not have it for years as I felt that they would deny my claim based on using organic sprays rather than commercial. I spoke to several people at Agricorp before I decded to opt in.
I think that when I started growing 12 years ago this would not have been the case but now the Ontario government is encouraging and promoting organic agriculture.

You are assuming that everyone has paid the very expensive insurance premiums and that all crops are covered. Lots of crops are not covered under the program and it is tough paying the huge premiums. My PYO apple neighbour payed premiums for years, when he had hail, he received nothing because he was PYO. He dropped his insurance. It would be good to hear from an insurance claim in Ontario.

thank goodness for crop insurance which is cost shared by the Province. THese people will receive 80% of their expected gross income on these lost crops.

And they don;t have to pick, pack or ship :-)

While we bash the government often, it is nice to stop and think about that fact that some of these tax dollars do come back to help us.

And I heard on the Hamilton radio that Puddicombe Farms suffered $100,000 worth of damage in a hailstorm, and that there had been a slick of ice on the major highway as well.

what a shitty year in Ontario, yet I hear of drought south of us.
