Queen’s Park Votes In Favour of Flavour
Casting a Ballot for Fruit Wines of Ontario

Monday, June 9th, 2008 – Official Queen’s Park Tasting - The votes are in, the ballots have been counted, and Fruit Wines of Ontario proudly take a seat in the house.  For the first time ever, Fruit Wines of Ontario were featured at an official Queen’s Park tasting, and years of hard-work and industry perseverance paid off, as fruit wines will now be available at the Legislative Assembly of Ontario in the dining room and also offered at special events held at Queen’s Park.

The Honourable Steve Peters, Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario, stated “. . .One of my initiatives as Speaker is to make the Legislative Assembly of Ontario a showcase of Ontario product.  Fruit wines are an excellent example of product made in our own backyard. The Legislature has featured grape wines for 20 years; the fruit wines will be a new experience for Members and guests of the Legislature.”  And what an experience it was!  Fruit Wines of Ontario have emerged from the ominous shadow cast by grape wines, and proved their place amongst Ontario’s repertoire of amazing home-grown products.

The judging process began with a pre-tasting led by Jim Warren, the Executive Director of Fruit Wines of Ontario on May7th, 2008.  More than 30 fruit wines were painstakingly narrowed down to 18 to be presented Monday, June 9th between 5:00 pm and 7:00 pm at Queen’s Park for an official tasting.  In an evening full of flavour and flattery, the Legislative Assembly of Ontario tasted the 18 wines presented in the following categories; Dry & Sparkling, Off-Dry and Sweet Wine, and voted by ballot for their favourite wines in each category.

Of the 78 ballots cast, the official results are as follows:

Dry & Sparkling Wine: Applewood Winery, Mac Mead (sparking)
Off-Dry Wine: Scotch Block Winery, Oak Aged Black Current
Sweet Wine: Archibald’s Winery, Spiced Winter Apple

Made from 100% Ontario fruit, fruit wines bottle the best of Ontario’s harvests, resulting in delicious wines crafted with apples, pears, peaches, cherries, raspberries, strawberries, cranberries and more.  A refreshing alternative to a dry table wine, a sparkling refresher, or a dessert icewine. Fruit Wines of Ontario have long deserved acknowledgement and support from the Ontario Government, and are delighted with the results from the June 9th tasting.  As farmers, winemakers, industry specialists and government officials continue to work together to ensure that Fruit Wines of Ontario are of top quality and flavour, events such as this pay tribute to and recognize the brilliant fruit wine available right here in Ontario.
